Repair and replacement of a turbine for a Mercedes

In order for the machine to work like a clock, you need to monitor its condition and timely change worn out or damaged parts. This fully applies to the turbocharger. The mechanism is quite simple, but important in the operation of the car. Replacing  a Mercedes turbine is also quite simple if you follow the steps in sequence.

Repair method

The turbine mechanism of a car consists of the following segments:

  • Hulls and snails;
  • Plain bearing and thrust element;
  • Remote bushing.

The body is made of aluminum alloy, but the shaft must be strong and therefore steel is used for its production. If the part is cracked or simply breaks, only replacing the assembly can solve the problem.

The presence of malfunctions and damage to the turbine is easy to determine. And it is available to any knowledgeable driver.

The principle of operation is quite simple. First of all, it is necessary to dismantle the faulty turbine.

For this:

  • The hoses that come from the assembly are disconnected, you need to act carefully. To prevent damage to nearby systems.
  • Then the snails are removed, trying to carefully disconnect the turbine, it is worth doing this as carefully as possible, gradually releasing the mounting bolts.

When this stage is completed, you need to check if there is any play in the shaft. If everything is in order, you need to further look for a malfunction. But even if there is a backlash, you need to make sure that it is large. After all, a small deviation is acceptable.

Further required:

  • Remove the compressor wheel using a special tool or ordinary pliers.
  • After that, the sealing inserts are removed, which are deep in the grooves of the rotor. After them, the thrust bearing is removed. It is dismantled without problems. Next comes the turn of the liners of the end part and plain bearings.
  • After the assembly is completely dismantled, it must be removed and cleaned if it is planned to repair the structure. Failure may be caused by insufficient care or maintenance.
  • After the assembly is removed and cleaned, it is necessary to check the correct fixation of the liners and, if necessary, balance the shaft.
  • Retaining rings are installed back into the cartridge. Then you need to install the turbine liner, and fix them with a retaining ring. The same is done with the compressor liner, as well as the sleeve. All parts are pre-lubricated well.
  • By installing a dirt-protecting plate and volutes, you can test the performance of the shaft.

If everything is in order, the car can be used, but when the problem arises again, you need to take it to the service.
